Allegheny County’s original jail was built in 1884. As it surpassed over 100 operational years, it no longer provided the space and standards necessary to house the facility’s population. The county elected to build a new facility to address crowding problems and updated correctional reform needs. Wellington was awarded the prime contract, supplying the electrification of the entire correctional center. The contract included power for medical services, inmate living “pods,” and safety and emergency systems. The Allegheny County Jail was opened in 1995 and housed 1,850 men and women.
